Exploring Yorke Island: A Hidden WWII Fort
We’d passed Yorke Island in Johnstone Strait plenty of times without realizing a secret WWII fort was hidden there. Built in the late 1930s to guard Vancouver’s backdoor, the base once held 60 buildings, big guns, and a garrison of soldiers cut off from the world. Today, many of those structures still stand—untouched, eerie, and full of history. When we finally stopped to explore, we found bunkers, gun placements, and echoes of the men who once called “Little Alcatraz” home. And while we were ashore, Izzie faced her first solo emergency at anchor.
